The Mental Health Research Institute has amalgamated with the Florey Neuroscience Institutes to form The Florey Institute of Neuroscience and Mental Health.

The research focus remains as it was on psychiatric conditions such as depression, bipolar disorder and schizophrenia and on neurodegenerative illnesses including dementias particularly Alzheimer's disease and Parkinson's disease.

We continue to raise funds to ensure we can continue vital research and are grateful for your ongoing support. Professor Colin Masters continues on as Executive Director of MHRI and as an Executive Director of the amalgamated entity.

The Mental Health Research Institute is a premier psychiatric research institute in Australia. Our researchers use laboratory and clinical research to understand the causes of psychiatric and neurodegenerative diseases, so they can be better diagnosed and treated. Ultimately, we hope to prevent such illnesses.

The Institute is formally affiliated with The University of Melbourne, Monash University and Melbourne Health.

History
The Mental Health Research Institute (MHRI) was founded in 1956 as part of the Victorian Hygiene Department. The Institute then specialised in common mental disorders in the community, with a focus on risk factors, prevention and appropriate treatment.

The building was located close to the original Royal Park Hospital in Parkville, one of Victoria’s busiest hospitals.
