Donations

The Institute’s research into Alzheimer's disease, schizophrenia, bipolar affective disorder, depressive illnesses and related issues like suicide and addiction is highly relevant to community needs. With ongoing support, MHRI can help make a brighter future for all Australians. While the commitment and enthusiasm of the Institute staff is uncompromising, there is still a long way to go in the field of mental health research. The research process requires expertise, dedication, time and money. Today, research is costly and progress is gradual.

Individuals and organisations interested in financially supporting the Institute's work should contact the Development and Public Affairs Manager on (03) 9388 1633 or email: enquiries@mhri.edu.au.

The Mental Health Research Institute has recently started a regular giving program called Masterminds that allows you to support the Institute on an ongoing basis by submitting a single authorisation form.

You can choose how much you give (minimum $10) and how often (choose from weekly, monthly and quarterly).

As well as receiving our biannual newsletter, Towards Understanding, you will receive our interim report for leading donors, Briefing Notes. You’ll also be invited to an annual event where you can hear about the Institute’s latest achievements and meet like-minded supporters.

Simply download this form and return it by fax to 03 9387 5061 or mail to:

Equipment Needs Remain Urgent

The ongoing need to replace or upgrade research equipment within the Institute remains a constant pressure. New equipment can often improve the quality of data produced from experiments, reduce the costs of outsourcing activities that could be performed in-house and accelerate the pace of research.

Traditionally, much of the equipment needed has been funded by trusts and foundations, individuals and corporates. Unfortunately, this is an area of funding that has been particularly affected by the Global Financial Crisis.

Some of the items currently required include:

  • An Orbital Large Shaking Refrigerated Incubator enabling us to grow and harvest our own bacterial and yeast cultures for the purification of recombinant (human) proteins saving the institute $67,500 a year currently spent purchasing proteins.
    Cost: $7,500
  • An Automated Rat Radial-arm Maze to assess cognitive changes in rats which would be used to enhance our current research into depression, schizophrenia, Parkinson’s disease and more.
    Cost: $30,000
  • An Automated Cell Counter capable of counting the number of viable and non-viable cells ((live, dead, and total cells) much more quickly and precisely than current tools.
    Cost: $9,000
